What do you see when you look at a blank canvas?

We see a world of opportunity. We revel in possibility and creativity, and we’re passionate about bringing visions to life. When you add on the excitement of venturing into the unknown—pursuing a disruptive business model with trusted partners—well, let’s just say it’s what gets us up each morning.

At the beginning of 2021, ChaChing came to us with a proposition. They had a great concept for an app that redefines how ad spending works, but they needed help getting it off the ground. They knew that they were onto something great by switching the paradigm from Cost Per Click (CPC) to Cost Per Acquisition (CPA). They had an innovative idea to use ad money to fuel cashback rebates for savvy shoppers who purchase any number of products through the app, but they had one small problem.

The didn't have an app yet.

The Problem

They got in touch with our team at Ole & Lena and laid out their concept in a kickoff call. We believed in their vision and signed on to build out their product from scratch. From the optimized user experience (UX) design to bringing in our trusted app developers, we were fully equipped to turn this innovative idea into a functional product.

By combining our creative approach with our decades of digital product experience, we mapped out the road to an application that closely aligned with their disruptive business model.

To compound this challenge, the app required expertise of both B2B and B2C design, as well as the ability to apply that understanding to create unique user journeys for both audiences. This was important since ChaChing’s model focuses on the advertisers who want to pay for exposure and the consumers who want to save money. We needed to build a portal that onboarded advertisers onto the platform, gave them the tools to set up and manage their campaigns, and track their progress.

At the same time, we needed to make it as easy, seamless, and convenient as possible for everyday users to shop through the app, keep track of their savings, and find more opportunities to earn.

Most digital product consultants and designers focus either on B2B or B2C. What sets our team at Ole & Lena apart—and ultimately led us to our succees in this project—is our expertise in both B2B and B2C environments.

As an early-stage startup, ChaChing also needed a partner who could take the initiative. Working with limited resources, they didn’t have the bandwidth or internal subject matter expertise to delegate every task. They needed a seasoned partner who could count on to push the concepts forward and drive results.

The final component came down to designing the app itself. Even if they served the interests of both advertisers and shoppers, none of that mattered if they couldn’t get people on the platform and keep them there. Retention and engagement were core design tenets, and so we pulled on our expertise in human centered design (HCD) to create a full-featured solution.

The Solution

From defining user personas to plotting customer journeys, we embraced an agile methodology that prioritized innovation and iteration. We were able to quickly develop a prototype of the product that allowed the team at ChaChing to visualize the potential of their big idea.

From there, it became a matter of leveraging feedback, looping in our designers and developers, and iterating on the app until it was perfected.

We knew that we wanted the advertiser portal to address business needs, so we developed tools to keep track of key performance indicators, to use data to gain valuable insights, and to manage multiple accounts. ChaChing offers advertisers an innovative way to allocate their ad spend, so we wanted to make the transition as easy as possible with free trial runs.

On the customer side, we optimized their experience by making it easy to track deals, find products, and make in-app purchases. We also built out a full-featured wallet that stores users' savings, allowing them to either directly transfer the funds to their bank account or use those savings to make further purchases. Lastly, we designed a notification system that helped users find more deals, both online and when shopping in-store.

The Results

After countless iterations over the span of nearly a year, ChaChing has the makings of a product that will satisfy even the most demanding digital native.

On top of building out the end-to-end customer journey and platform, we’re especially proud of the work we did on the data infrastructure for the advertiser portal. We made it easy for clients to monitor key metrics like win-rate, break down indicators by products/campaigns, oversee multiple products at once, and find ways to leverage ChaChing and increase sales.
